Ambiguous Language

Ambiguous Words or Phrases

As we experience more and more of the effects of what seems to be global warming, we need to consider restrictions on our current way of life. Unless we stop living the way we have been living, we will surely suffer and be guilty of bringing misfortune to our children and grandchildren.

Consider these words:

Equality Freedom Obscenity Happiness

Can we easily agree on what these things are?

Keep in mind the following rule: The more abstract a word or phrase, the more likely there can be multiple interpretations and thus need clear definition by the author or speaker. A term becomes more and more abstract as it refers less and less to specific instances.

For example:

Equality vs. having equal access to the necessities of life.

Freedom vs. the freedom to choose which school your children attend.
